Using standardized fish‐specific autonomous reef monitoring structures (<scp>FARMS</scp>) to quantify cryptobenthic fish communities

چکیده

Biodiversity inventories and monitoring techniques for marine fishes often overlook small (<5 cm), bottom-associated (‘cryptobenthic’) fishes, few standardized, comparative assessments of cryptobenthic fish communities exist. We sought to develop a quantitative survey method that permits their sampling across variety habitats conditions. Fish-specific autonomous reef structures (FARMS) are designed sample using suite accessible affordable materials. To generate microhabitats, FARMS consist three layers stacked PVC pipes in different sizes, as well bottom top level loose PVC-pipe fragments mesh basket. deployed habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, oyster mangroves, soft-bottom six locations (Hawai'i, Texas, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Curaçao). From shallow estuaries reefs beyond 100 m depth, attracted distinct native with strong site or habitat specificity. Comparing the sampled alternative methods (enclosed clove-oil stations on Panama units Texas) suggests yield subset species representative those present local reefs. The role of cryptobenthic reef fishes in coral reef trophodynamics

An examination of the trophic status of a cryptobenthic reef fish community from the central Great Barrier Reef was carried out to evaluate the potential role of cryptobenthic fishes in coral reef ecosystems. Using frequency of occurrence data, dietary analyses revealed a diverse range of trophic groups, although detritivory (in 10 out of 16 species and 39.3% of individuals) and carnivory (5 of...

Cryptobenthic fish assemblages across the coral reef− seagrass continuum in SE Sulawesi, Indonesia

Cryptobenthic fishes have a significant influence on coral reef ecosystem dynamics; however, they have received considerably less attention than their larger, more conspicuous fish counterparts. In nearby seagrass zones, there is little or no information about cryptobenthic fishes, even for basic parameters such as density and distribution, although smaller organisms may have a substantial effe...

Influence of live coral cover on coral-reef fish communities

The effect of percentage live coral cover on the number of fish species and individuals was determined by censusing fish from a series of reefs of comparable structural complexity, but with different proportions of live coral, in the lagoon of Mataiva Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago. Regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between live coral c...

Fish-derived nutrient hotspots shape coral reef benthic communities.

Animal-derived nutrients play an important role in structuring nutrient regimes within and between ecosystems. When animals undergo repetitive, aggregating behavior through time, they can create nutrient hotspots where rates of biogeochemical activity are higher than those found in the surrounding environment. In turn, these hotspots can influence ecosystem processes and community structure. We...

Fishing degrades size structure of coral reef fish communities.

Fishing pressure on coral reef ecosystems has been frequently linked to reductions of large fishes and reef fish biomass. Associated impacts on overall community structure are, however, less clear. In size-structured aquatic ecosystems, fishing impacts are commonly quantified using size spectra, which describe the distribution of individual body sizes within a community. We examined the size sp...
